THE PROJECT BACKSTORY

Scentre Group owns and operates 42 Westfield centres, 37 across Australia and five in New Zealand, drawing hundreds of millions of customer visits every year. Casual leasing sites, pop-up retail, food stalls and live events run through the common areas of all of them, and every one of those activations needs power delivered at floor level.

Until 2021 the boxes delivering it varied from centre to centre, with no single approved unit sitting behind them. Scentre Group wanted one design it could specify everywhere, built for the conditions of a shopping centre floor.

ECD was approached to develop it.

WHAT WE DID

Working with Westfield and Scentre Group, ECD set out to replace a mixed collection of products with a single custom unit covering the whole portfolio. To do this, we:

Designed a heavy duty, load rated stainless steel floor box, waterproof and lockable, for use across centre common areas.
Developed two versions of it, one serving standard power outlets and one built for industrial three phase supply.
Delivered more than 500 boxes inside a very tight program, across centres in both countries.
Documented the design so it could be specified the same way on every current and future Westfield project, removing the guesswork from centre level procurement.

Westfield now use the design exclusively across the network, and the design has since been commercialised into the ECD standard range for other clients to draw on.
