THE PROJECT BACKSTORY
Nyaal Banyul, the Geelong Convention and Event Centre, is a point of architectural pride in Geelong City and one of the largest developments regional Victoria has seen. The waterfront precinct combines a 1,000-seat venue, major exhibition spaces, event areas, and a connected 200-room hotel.
A venue of this scale has demands many buildings never face. Exhibition floors need to take the weight of trucks and heavy installations while keeping power and services readily accessible across the space. That’s where ECD came in: designing and supplying the heavy-duty floor and pit box systems built into the exhibition areas.

WHAT WE DID
ECD was tasked with designing extra-strength floor and pit boxes for the event areas at Nyaal Banyul, engineered to a Class D 80kN load rating in full compliance with AS/NZS 3996. These are not standard service fittings. The venue needed to accommodate everything from major trade displays to heavy equipment moving across the floor, which meant each unit had to sit flush with the surface, withstand extraordinary loads, and still deliver power and other services reliably wherever they were required.
The solution was a fully integrated system built from stainless steel, concealing a dense array of power, data, fibre optic, audio visual, and plumbing outlets beneath the floor. Gas struts were incorporated throughout so the lids could be raised and closed safely during set-up and pack-down, and every unit was rated to take a fully loaded semi-trailer driving directly over it. The result is infrastructure that stays completely out of sight until it’s needed, then performs as the venue demands.
